"It is evidently still quite possible for essays to find admission to journals of high standing like the »Nineteenth Century« and the »Quarterly Review,« in whicht the writers not only make mistakes, but mistakes of an elementary and substantial character as if in discussing chemistry a writer were to confound oxygen with hydrogen, or as in discussion geometry he were to confound an isosceles with a right-angled triangle."

Sir Robert Giffen war Herausgeber bzw. Mitherausgeber von Economist, Daily News und Times. 1876 wurde er Chef der Statistischen Abteilung des Board of Trade, 1882 Präsident der Royal Statistical Society. Am 21. März 1882 wetterte er gegen die mißbräuchliche Nutzung von (Handels-)Statistiken, insbesondere, wenn man das Zahlenmaterial selbst nie in der Hand gehabt habe. Giffen ist auch "Erfinder" des Giffen-Gutes.
