"Southerners died fighting in large numbers to protect their machines (or, more exactly, the machines of the small minority of southerners who owned slaves at all). The machines were worth it: »The wealth piled up by the bondsman’s two hundred and fifty years of unrequired toil.« If the slaves were in fact as inefficient as Northern abolitionists and Southern sentimentalists believed at the time it would be hard to understand why the South impelled to break with the Union."

Im Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg ging es demnach um mehr als Ethik, Moral und Menschenrechte: Wie so oft im Krieg, waren wirtschaftliche Interessen von nicht zu unterschätzender Bedeutung. Und um diesen Aspekt der Vergangenheit und damit selbige wirklich zu verstehen, gibt es die Wirtschaftsgeschichte. Man sollte sie ernst nehmen. Manchmal bietet sie sogar einen nicht unwichtigen Hintergrund für aktuelle Ereignisse, wo sich in CNN-Bildern (neben den omnipräsenten Reportern vor Ort) weit überwiegend Menschen dunkler Hautfarbe in der Massenevakuierung im Superdome finden bzw. fanden. Obwohl New Orleans im Bürgerkrieg schon früh von der Union kampflos erobert wurde.
